steps from the Village Gondola), this comfy 1980s-stye hotel was renovated in recent
years and now offers a wide range of sleep- over options. The studios and standard
rooms are fine, but the loft suites are the way to go with their contemporary furnishings
and handy kitchenettes.
Nita Lake Lodge HOTEL$$$

( 604-966-5700, 888-755-6482; www.nitalakelodge.com ; 2135 Lake Placid Rd; d from $199;
) Adjoining Creekside railway station, and handy if you're coming up on the Rocky
Mountaineer train, this swanky timber-framed lodge is perfect for a pampering retreat.
Hugging the lakeside, the chic but cozy rooms feature individual patios, rock fireplaces
and baths with heated floors and large tubs - some also have handy kitchens. Creekside
lifts are a walkable few minutes away.
There's an excellent on-site West Coast restaurant, but a free shuttle can whisk you to
the village if you want to dine further afield. Summer rates also include free-use bikes
and fishing rods.
Eating
Purebread BAKERY$
( www.purebread.ca ; 4338 Main St; baked goods $3-5; 8:30am-7pm) When this Function
Junction legend finally opened a village branch, the locals came running. And they've
been queuing ever since. They're here for the cornucopia of eye-rollingly-good bakery
treats including salted-caramel bars, sour-cherry choc-chip cookies and the amazing
Crack, a naughtily gooey shortbread cookie bar. There's savory here, too - go for the
hearty homity pie.
Service is ever friendly and if you arrive just after the early-morning bake-a-thon, you
can expect the aromas to lure you into tripling your purchase (at least). Wash it all down
with a large coffee from Portland-based Stumptown.
Gone Village Eatery CAFE$
( www.gonevillageeatery.com ; 4205 Village Sq; mains $6-12; 6:30am-9pm; ) Aim for the
only booth at this well-hidden locals' fave and tuck into a wide range of hearty, good-
value comfort grub of the chili, chicken-curry and steak-and-potatoes variety - this is
where many fuel up for a calorie-burning day on the slopes (have a Mars Bar coffee
when you return). There are also internet computer terminals ($1 per 10 minutes).
