In-Depth Information
Main Street & Commercial Drive
Home to Vancouver's hipster scene, Main St is lined with Vancouver's best indie stores
and bars. There are also some cool-ass coffee shops - but you'll find even more of those
further east on Commercial Dr, a funky, Bohemian strip famed for its Italian java haunts.
South False Creek Seawall WATERFRONT
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(cnr Quebec St & Terminal Ave; Main St-Science World) Starting a few steps from Science
World, this popular waterfront trail along False Creek's southern shoreline is about 3km
long and takes you to Granville Island. You'll pass the giant Olympic Village , Habitat Is-
land - a mini-sanctuary for passing bird life - and the dockside Stamps Landing area
before reaching the back entrance to the island (it's actually a peninsula).
Hot Art Wet City GALLERY
( www.hotartwetcity.com ; 2206 Main St; noon-5pm Wed-Sat; 3) Possibly the most
fun you can have at a private gallery in Vancouver. Trip up the stairs at this funky little
space and you're guaranteed some eye-popping art to look at. Mostly local artists are
showcased and there's a new exhibition every month. Past themes have ranged from
bizarre paintings of dolls' heads to art on beer bottles.
Grandview Park PARK
(Commercial Dr, btwn Charles & William Sts; 20) The Drive's alfresco neighborhood hub is
named after the smashing views peeking between its trees: to the north are the North
Shore mountains, while to the west is a cityscape vista of twinkling towers. Teeming
with buskers, dreadlocked drummers, impromptu sidewalk sales and and a waft or two of
naughty-cigarette smoke, the park is a big summertime lure for locals.
Granville Island
Tucked under the looming Granville Bridge and studded with restaurants, bars, theaters
and artisan studios, this gentrified former industrial peninsula - not actually an island - is
one of Vancouver's best lazy-afternoon haunts.
