Chinatown Millennium Gate LANDMARK
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(cnr W Pender & Taylor Sts; Stadium-Chinatown) Chinatown's towering entrance is the
landmark most visitors look for here. Stand well back, since the decoration is mostly on
its lofty upper reaches: an elaborately painted section topped with a terracotta-tiled roof.
The characters inscribed on its eastern front implore you to 'Remember the past and look
forward to the future.'
The gate sits on a historic site: a temporary wooden one was built here for a royal visit
in 1912.
Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden & Park GARDENS
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.vancouverchinesegarden.com ; 578 Carrall St; adult/child $12/9; 9:30am-7pm;
Stadium-Chinatown) A tranquillity break from clamorous Chinatown, this intimate 'garden
of ease' illustrates the Taoist symbolism behind the placing of gnarled pine trees, wind-
ing covered pathways and ancient limestone formations. Entry includes a 45-minute
guided tour - look out for the lazy turtles bobbing in the jade-colored water - where
you'll learn that everything in the garden reflects balance and harmony.
If you're on a tight budget, check out the adjacent Dr Sun Yat-Sen Park instead. Not
as elaborate as its sister, this free-entry spot is still a pleasant oasis of whispering grasses,
a large fishpond and a small pagoda.
Chinatown Night Market MARKET
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.vancouverchinatownnightmarket.com ; Keefer St, btwn Columbia & Main Sts; 6-11pm Fri-
Sun mid-May-early Sep; Stadium-Chinatown) Recently reinvented to compete with the
success of larger night markets in Richmond, Chinatown's version is well worth a
summer-evening visit. Cheap and cheerful trinkets still feature, but the highlight here is
the food - it's like a walk-through buffet of fish balls, bubble tea and tornado potatoes.
Check ahead: there's an eclectic roster of live entertainment including alfresco movie
screenings.
