Grant County Ranch & Rodeo Museum MUSEUM

Sep) Rodeo -lovers should visit this small museum, which showcases fine saddles and
lots of rodeo photos. The friendly guys there really know the local rodeo and ranch
scene. Call for off-hours visits.
Grant County Historical Museum MUSEUM

Sep) Located just 2 miles south of downtown John Day, in the center of tiny Canyon City,
this interesting museum houses gold-rush memorabilia, lots of polished agates and some
stuffed two-headed calves. Outside is frontier poet Joaquin Miller's cabin.

the area. There are a few chain hotel/motels in town.
Hotel Prairie HOTEL$

located in Prairie City, 13 miles east of John Day, is this historic 1905 hotel with nine
suites (one with kitchenette). There's a subdued, classy atmosphere and rooms are simple
but comfortable; out back is a nice modern patio for hanging out. Cafe on premises.
Dreamers Lodge MOTEL$
( 800-654-2849; 144 N Canyon Blvd; d from $63; ) One of John Day's better-value
places, this decent motel offers good-sized rooms (the ones with two beds are huge) and
it's off the main drag.
Clyde Holliday State Park CAMPGROUND$
( 800-551-6949, 541-932-4453; www.oregonstateparks.org ; Hwy 26, Mile 155, Mt Vernon; tent &
RV sites $22, tipis $39; ) Six miles west of John Day, this pleasant, shady campground
(with tipis) lies next to the John Day River, though it's also close to the road.
