Getting There & Away
NEO Transit ( 541-426-3840; www.sites.google.com/a/neotransit.org/index ) Monday to
Saturday services from Enterprise to Joseph and Wallowa Lake (June to September).
Year-round buses twice weekly link Joseph, Enterprise and La Grande.
JOSEPH TO HALFWAY - OR BUST
From Joseph, paved USFS Rd 39 skirts the eastern Wallowas and heads south to
Hwy 86, just east of Halfway. Part of the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, this drive
links the northern and southern halves of the Wallowas. It also provides access to
Hells Canyon Overlook, 3 miles off USFS Rd 39 on USFS Rd 3965, the only canyon
viewpoint you can drive to over a paved surface.
It's 73 miles between Joseph and Halfway along this route. USFS Rd 39 is usually
closed November through May (dependent on the weather; it's groomed for snow-
mobiles and cross-country skiing). There are trailheads and campsites along the
way, but no gas stations or other services.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Joseph
POP 1100
If ever there was a trendy eastern Oregon town, it's Joseph. You can see its wealth right
on the brick sidewalks, where well-groomed planter boxes and huge bronze statues sit
proudly on downtown street corners. Many of the old storefronts are now glitzy
boutiques, peddling everything from inexpensive souvenirs to huge, expensive bronzes.
There seem to be more galleries than anything else, and Valley Bronze - one of the na-
tion's largest foundries - anchors the artistic heart of this old frontier town.
