Rising to the east of Diamond Lake is pointy Mt Thielsen , a 9182ft basalt spire. A
5-mile trail (10 miles round-trip; Northwest Forest Pass required or pay $5 on-site) be-
gins 1 mile north of the junction of Hwys 138 and 230 and stops 80ft short of the sum-
mit, which is attainable only with technical climbing skills.
Diamond Lake Campground ( 541-793-3310; www.diamondlake.net/summer.html ; USFS
Rd 4795; campsites $16-22) has 238 sites and offers plenty of camping amenities at the
north end of the lake. It's such a popular place that you should reserve in summer.
Diamond Lake Resort ( 800-733-7593, 541-793-3333; www.diamondlake.net ; 350 Resort
Dr; d from $99) offers motel-type rooms, studios, Jacuzzi suites and two-bedroom cabins
with kitchens. Dining options include a cafe, a pizzeria and sports grill with outdoor
patio. There's a small store, and boats, canoes, kayaks, bicycles, fishing gear and ski
equipment are all available for rent.
Lemolo Lake
Ten miles north of Diamond Lake is Lemolo Lake, a much quieter, family-oriented resort
with views across the reservoir to faraway Mt Thielsen.
The 1.7-mile hike to Lemolo Falls is worth the off-road drive. Turn off Hwy 138 onto
USFS Rd 2610 (Lemolo Lake Rd) for 4.2 miles, then left onto USFS Rd 3401 (Thorn
Prairie Rd) for half a mile. Then turn right onto USFS Rd 800 for 1.8 miles, and another
right at USFS Rd 840 for 0.3 miles.
Poole Creek Campground ( 541-498-2531; USFS Rd 2610; tent sites $15) is a popular,
woodsy, USFS-maintained ground - the best sites are right near the lake. There's also a
boat ramp; bring mosquito repellant.
Lemolo Lake Resort ( 541-643-0750; www.lemololakeresort.com ; 2610 Birds Point Rd;
hookups $30, r $89-149, cabins $149-250) is a casual and funky place with a nondescript RV
campsite, A-frame cabins, a boat ramp, a small store and a cafe-restaurant. Boat rentals
are available, but you'll have to bring your own alcohol and TV. It's 5 miles off Hwy
138, up Lemolo/Birds Point Rd.
