TOP OF CHAPTER
Jacksonville
This former gold-prospecting town is the oldest settlement in Southern Oregon and a Na-
tional Historic Landmark. Small but endearing, the town's main drag - California St - is
like a step back in time, lined with well-preserved brick-and-wood buildings dating from
the 1880s. Today, folks come to stroll around downtown and enjoy the old-time atmo-
sphere while exploring the many boutiques and galleries. Although summertime is great,
Jacksonville has a certain magic touch in winter, when the crowds are lighter and the old-
fashioned 'Victorian Christmas' holiday celebrations take hold.
Don't miss the Britt Festival, a world-class musical experience that runs all summer
long. And in the surrounding Applegate Valley there are several wineries to visit, offer-
ing more varietals than just pinot noir; see www.applegatewinetrail.com for more.
BRITT FESTIVAL
In 1963, Portland conductor John Trudeau came to Jacksonville with a few friends,
and they found themselves on the former hillside estate of Peter Britt (1819-1905),
a Swiss photographer who made a name for himself after immigrating to Oregon.
These musicians noticed the exceptional acoustics of the hillsides surrounding
Britt's old home, and that same year built a plywood stage for a local orchestral
performance. Thus was born the Pacific Northwest's first outdoor music festival.
In 1978 a pavilion was constructed and the festival continued to grow and attract
top-notch artists. The nonprofit Britt Festival ( www.brittfest.org ; Jun-Sep) is now a
premier music festival attracting tens of thousands of revelers; it also sponsors
educational programs through the Britt Institute. For more information, head to
the festival's website. And for more on Peter Britt and his many talents, go to
