Southern Oregon's largest metropolis, Medford is well known for its fruit industry, espe-
cially pears and wine grapes. In the past decade the city has grown tremendously, draw-
ing thousands of California retirees with its sunny warm weather. It's also well located,
with plenty of affordable accommodations, and Ashland, Jacksonville, Crater Lake, Ore-
gon Caves National Monument and the Rogue River valley are all a day trip away.

Medford's most famous tourist attraction is this outlet store of the giant mail-order fruit
company. It offers nearby plant tours (
877-322-8000; tours $5) with advance reserva-
tions.
Tou Velle State Park PARK
About 6 miles north of Medford on the Rogue River, this state park is popular for swim-
ming and picnicking. About a mile beyond is Table Rocks , impressive 800ft mesas that
speak of the area's volcanic past and are home to unique plant and animal species.
Flowery spring is the best time for hiking to the flat tops, which were revered Native
American sites.
From downtown, follow Riverside Ave north and turn right on Table Rock Rd. After
Tou Velle State Park, fork either left to reach the trailhead to Lower Table Rock (3.5-mile
round-trip hike) or right for Upper Table Rock (2.5-mile round-trip hike). The Bureau of
Land Management (BLM; 541-618-2200; www.or.blm.gov ; 3040 Biddle Rd) has information
and offers guided springtime hikes.
Sleeping & Eating
Medford's Riverside Ave has plenty of budget and midrange motels, but the cheapest can
be a bit grungy and most are within earshot of the I-5.

pite being on a busy avenue, this is a pleasant, large motel with spacious, clean rooms
