Port Orford
POP 1200
Perched on a grassy headland and wedged between two magnificent state parks, the ham-
let of Port Orford is one of Oregon's true natural ocean harbors (most others are situated
along river mouths). It's on one of the most scenic stretches of coastal highway and there
are stellar views even from the center of town. While Port Orford is still a small place,
the outside world has discovered its charms: an upscale retreat is nestled a half-mile from
the center, and in 2010 renowned glass artist Chris Hawthorne opened a fancy gallery,
along with the area's finest restaurant.

a Coast Guard station. Check out the 36ft 'unsinkable' motor lifeboat on display.
Cape Blanco State Park PARK
( 541-332-6774; www.oregonstateparks.org ; US 101) Nine miles north of Port Orford, off US
101, this rugged promontory is the second most westerly point of the continental USA
and host to a fine state park with hiking trails spreading out over the headland. Sighted in
1603 by Spanish explorer Martin d'Anguilar, Cape Blanco juts far out into the Pacific,
withstanding lashing winds that can pass 100mph. Visitors can tour the Cape Blanco
