In-Depth Information
POP 1400
Located 10 miles south of Lincoln City, little Depoe Bay is edged by modern timeshare
condominiums but still retains some original coastal charm. It lays claim to having the
'world's smallest navigable harbor' and being the 'world's whale-watching capital' -
pretty big talk for such a pint-sized town. Whale-watching and charter fishing are the
main attractions in the area, though 5 miles south of town there is also the Devil's Punch-
bowl, an impressive collapsed sea cave that churns with waves and offers good tide pools
nearby (get there via Otter Crest Loop, a scenic road).
The chamber of commerce ( 541-765-2889; www.depoebaychamber.org ; 223 SW US 101,
Suite B; 11am-3pm Sun-Wed, 9am-3pm Thu-Sat) is next to the Mazatlan restaurant. An im-
pressive Whale Watching Center ( 541-765-3304; www.whalespoken.org ; 119 SW US 101;
9am-5pm) has good exhibits and provides binoculars and views out to sea. There's also a
Whale, Sealife & Shark Museum ( 541-765-2219; 234 SW US 101; adult/child 4-12yr $5/3;
9am-5pm) , wonderful if you like dioramas. For whale-watching, contact Dockside
Charters (
