Manzanita
POP 600
One of the more laid-back beach resorts on Oregon's coast is the hamlet of Manzanita,
boasting lovely white-sand beaches and a slightly upscale clientele. It's much smaller
and far less hyped than Cannon Beach, and still retains a peaceful atmosphere. You can
relax on the beach, take part in a few activities and hike on nearby Neahkahnie Moun-
tain, where high cliffs rise dramatically above the Pacific's pounding waves.

Hiking
Five miles north is Oswald West State Park ( 503-368-3575) , a beautiful preserve with
dense coastal rainforest and two headlands. For a good hike, take the 2.4-mile trail to
Cape Falcon , which offers expansive views and good birdwatching. For more exercise,
climb 2.5 miles to the top of 1660ft Neahkahnie Mountain , which towers above Ne-
halem Bay and offers amazing views - on a clear day, you can see 50 miles out to sea.
