In-Depth Information
During low tide you can walk out to the rock and investigate tide pools and sea caves.
In summer, volunteers are on hand to help protect the area and provide infomation
( www.cannon-beach.net/hrap ). Please do not remove anything from the tide pools.
The closest access to Haystack Rock is at the end of Gower St, a mile south. Note that
there's another monolith also confusingly called Haystack Rock, off Cape Kiwanda to
the south.
OREGON COAST FOR FAMILIES
The Oregon Coast is a great destination for families. Cities like Seaside and New-
port have affordable accommodations, good beaches and family atmosphere. Here
are some particularly fun places to take the kids:
Seaside Aquarium ( Click here ) Slightly cheesy, but you can feed the seals!
Oregon Coast Aquarium ( Click here ) Cutting edge, with plenty for kids to see and
do.
Hatfield Marine Science Center ( Click here ) Educational, surprisingly good and
free (but donations are welcome).
Umpqua Discovery Center ( Click here ) Learn interactively about the area's cultur-
al history.
Prehistoric Gardens ( Click here ) Large-scale dinosaur replicas; need we say
more?

Sandcastle Day CULTURE
