In-Depth Information
Cannon Beach
POP 1700
Charming Cannon Beach is one of the most popular beach resorts on the Oregon Coast.
Several premier hotels here cater to a fancier clientele, as do the town's many boutiques
and art galleries. In summer the streets are ablaze with flowers. Unlike Seaside's Coney
Island-like atmosphere, Cannon Beach is toned down and much more refined. Lodging
is expensive, and the streets are jammed: on a warm sunny Saturday, you'll spend a good
chunk of time just finding a parking spot.
Just offshore is another reason for the town's popularity. Glorious Haystack Rock is a
magnet for beachgoers - providing great photo opportunities and tide-pooling possibilit-
ies - and the wide sandy beach stretches for miles.
Sights & Activities
If you want to check out the local surfing, visit Cannon Beach Surf ( 503-436-0475;
www.cannonbeachsurf.com ; 1088 S Hemlock St) for board rentals and lessons. Landlubbers
who like to pedal can rent three-wheeled sand bicycles at Family Fun Cycle (
503-436-2247; 1160 S Hemlock St) . The chamber of commerce has a list of area hikes.
Horseback riding is available at Sea Ranch RV Park.
Ecola State Park PARK
( 503-436-2844; day-use fee $5) Located just north of town, Ecola State Park offers se-
clusion and great picnicking. Short paths at Ecola Point lead over the headland to dra-
matic views of Cannon Beach's sandy shore, sharply punctuated by stone monoliths and
all hunkered beneath the Coast Range.
Leading north from here is an 8-mile stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail ( Click here ) ,
which follows the same route traversed by the Corps of Discovery in 1806. Highlights on
this trail include a sandy cove at Indian Beach (which is popular with surfers and stood
in for La Push beach in the original Twilight movie) and Tillamook Head (which offers
awesome views).
Haystack Rock LANDMARK
Haystack Rock is Cannon Beach's iconic symbol, a beautiful hulking monolith that rises
235ft and has had cameos in several movies. It's part of the Oregon Islands National
Wildlife Refuge and home to a variety of seabirds, including the charmingly cute tufted
puffin.
