Maupin & the Lower Deschutes River
The Lower Deschutes River boasts some of the Northwest's most renowned white-water
rafting. For a dramatic peek at white water without getting wet, head to Sherars Falls ,
about 9 miles north of Maupin. You might see Native Americans dip-net fishing on
wooden platforms right above the water. Maupin provides most of the area's services.
Activities
Rafting
The Lower Deschutes River is ideal for rafting, with about 100 miles of mostly class III
rapids flowing thtough stark canyon landscapes and basalt cliffs before mingling with the
Columbia to the north. Most expeditions are one-day adventures that leave from
Harpham Flat, about 5 miles upstream from Maupin (the nearest town), and end about 15
miles down the river at Sandy Beach. Longer two- and three-day excursions are also
available.
A boater pass is required for all floaters (per person per day $2 weekdays, $6 to $8
weekends). It's available online at www.boaterpass.com , which also has details on this
local system.
Maupin's outfitters include the following:
