In-Depth Information
» Wahkeena Falls (242ft) Hike up the Wahkeena Trail, join Trail No 441 and head
down to Multnomah Falls. Return via the road for the 4.8-mile loop.
» Multnomah Falls (620ft) The gorge's top attraction. A 1-mile trail leads to the
top. Continue up forested Multnomah Creek and the top of Larch Mountain (anoth-
er 7 miles).
» Oneonta Falls (65ft) Located within the lovely, half-mile Oneonta Gorge. Care-
fully scamper over log jams and wade in water up to waist-high. Fun and worth it!
» Horsetail Falls (176ft) Just east of Oneonta Gorge. A 2.6-mile loop begins here,
passing through Ponytail Falls (and with an optional side trail to Triple Falls). Walk a
half-mile east on US 30 (passing the Oneonta Gorge) to return.
» Elowah Falls (230ft) More isolated but pretty falls about 1 mile off the highway.
Hike to the top, then take a 0.7-mile side trail to McCord Creek Falls (2.5 miles
round-trip).
Activities
Hood River may be the gorge's windsurfing capital, but the wind blows hard at The
Dalles too. Right in town, Riverfront Park (exit 85) is a good spot for beginners. Avery
Park , 8 miles from town, offers access to the river from the Washington side. A favorite
entry point with strong west winds is Celilo Park , about 10 miles east of town.
Sunshine Mill WINE TASTING
( 541-298-8900; 901 East 2nd St; noon-6pm Sat-Thu, to 10pm Fri) Atmospherically loc-
ated in an old flour mill, this wine bar is an awesome place to take a break, nibble on
snacks and taste some wine from two boutique wineries. Cool industrial-art touches;
check out the 'man-lift' elevator and Thomas Edison-designed motor in a nearby room.
Live music on Fridays from 7pm to 10pm.
There are plans to add a hotel and restaurant on the premises sometime in the next few
years.
