TOP OF CHAPTER
Hood River
One of the best windsurfing and kiteboarding destinations in the world is the dynamic
town of Hood River. Strong river currents, prevailing westerly winds and a vast body of
water provide the perfect conditions for these wind sports, attracting sometimes hundreds
of photogenic enthusiasts who zip back and forth across the wide Columbia River.
But Hood River offers more than awesome winds. South of town, the Hood River
drains a wide fertile valley planted with orchards. During spring, the area fills with the
scent and color of pink and white blossoms, and roadside fruit stands peddle apples,
pears, cherries, berries and vegetables.
Premier wineries have also taken hold in the region, providing good wine-tasting op-
portunities. Hwy 35, which traverses the valley, continues south 40 miles to Mt Hood,
Oregon's best-known mountain and a mecca for more great outdoor activities.
THE FRUIT LOOP
Covering 35 miles along scenic fertile lands, the Hood River County Fruit Loop
takes you by family fruit stands, U-pick orchards, lavender fields, alpaca farms and
winery tasting rooms. There are blossoms in spring, berries in summer, and apples
and pears in fall - with plenty of festivals and celebrations throughout the seasons
(except for winter). It's a good way to sample the area's agricultural bounties while
appreciating the local scenery too. For more information and a list of events, check
