; 901 W 1st Ave; r $68-110; )

ally just a run-of-the-mill motel with a hip red-and-black color scheme. Clean and effi-
cient, it has an unbeatable downtown location.

Davenport Hotel
HISTORIC HOTEL$$$
( 509-455-8888;
www.thedavenporthotel.com
;
10 S Post St; Davenport Tower/Davenport Hotel r
from $120/130; )
As much historic monument as luxury sleepover, the Davenport
is one of the most memorable hotels in the Pacific Northwest. The ostentatious lobby ex-
tracts a sharp intake of breath from most visitors; everything from the huge fireside vases
to the garbage buckets in the restrooms exhibit incredible attention to detail. The truly
lavish guest rooms feature beautifully hand-carved custom-made beds.
Even if you're not staying here, be sure to check out the ornate Marie Antoinette Ball-
room. The newer, funkier Davenport Tower wing showcases an improbable safari theme
(think stuffed animals and zebra-striped chairs) yet still manages to look sophisticated.
The winner of copious awards, this AAA four-diamond beauty was constructed in
1914 to the design of talented local architect Kirtland Cutter.
Montvale Hotel
BOUTIQUE HOTEL$$$
( 509-747-1919;
www.montvalehotel.com
;
1005 W 1st Ave; r $90-200; )
Built in 1899 to
house miners and laborors who wearily landed here, Spokane's oldest hotel targets a
more discerning clientele nowadays. Upstairs, a refined inner quadrangle with atrium
ceilings and a roaring fireplace has a distinctly European feel. Rooms continue the
Continental theme, mixing plush old-world furnishings with plenty of up-to-date gadgets.
In the basement you'll find Catacombs, a medieval-themed pub.
