Riverfront Park PARK
( www.spokaneriverfrontpark.com ; ) The former site of Spokane's 1974 World's Fair and
Exposition, this park provides a welcome slice of urban greenery in the middle of down-
town. It has been redeveloped in recent years with a 17-point sculpture walk MAP
GOOGLE MAP , along with plenty of bridges and trails to satisfy the city's abundance of
amateur runners.
The park's centerpiece is Spokane Falls MAP GOOGLE MAP , a gushing combina-
tion of scenic waterfalls and foaming rapids that can get pretty tempestuous after heavy
rain. There are various viewing points over the river, including a short gondola ride
MAP GOOGLE MAP (adult/child $7.75/4; 11am-6pm Sun-Thu, to 10pm Fri & Sat Apr-Sep) ,
which takes you directly above the falls, or the cheaper and equally spectacular Monroe
Street Bridge MAP GOOGLE MAP , built in 1911 and still the largest concrete arch in

the USA.
Originally part of a railway depot built in 1902, the 151ft clocktower MAP
GOOGLE MAP in the center of the park has become the city's signature sight. The
kitschy Pavilion MAP GOOGLE MAP is a small amusement park in the summer and an
ice rink in the winter. The adjacent Imax Theater MAP GOOGLE MAP ( tel, info 509
625 6686; adult/child US$8/6; shows hourly noon-7pm daily Mar-Oct, Fri-Sun & holidays Oct-
Mar) seats 385 people and boasts a 53ft-high screen.
Like some relic from an old-fashioned fairground, the 1909 hand-carved carousel
MAP GOOGLE MAP (admission $2; noon-5pm weekends & holidays) is a kids classic
and, along with the larger-than-life Radio Flyer Wagon MAP GOOGLE MAP sculpture,
should keep families occupied for a couple of hours. A miniature tour train ($5) can cart
you from A to B in the park, or you can join the walkers and joggers on the Spokane
River Centennial Trail ( www.spokanecentennialtrail.org ) , which extends for 37 miles to the
Idaho border and beyond.
