sandwiches are packed for your picnic, or (if you can get a table) eaten at the simple
cafe. Try the butternut-squash panini with mozzarella, roasted garlic, sage and provolone
or the flank-steak torta with pickled jalapenos, avocado, tomato, cilantro and chipotle
dressing. Plenty of vegetarian and nonvegetarian options.

ing, this breezy cafe-market serving breakfast and lunch is a good place to line your

Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen MEDITERRANEAN$$$
$$$
( 509-525-2112; www.saffronmediterraneankitchen.com ; 125 W Alder St; mains $15-27;
2-10pm, to 9pm winter) This place isn't about cooking; it's about alchemy: Saffron takes
seasonal, local ingredients and turns them into pure gold. The Med-inspired menu lists
dishes such as pheasant, ricotta gnocchi, amazing flatbreads and weird yogurt-cucumber
combo soups that could stand up against anything in Seattle. Then there are the intelli-
gently paired wines - and beers. It's insanely popular, so be sure to reserve.
Brasserie 4 FRENCH$$$
$$$
( 509-529-2011; 4 E Main St; mains $15-25; closed Mon, lunch Tue & dinner Sun) Sharing a
latitude with Bordeaux and a French passion for growing grapes, it was only a matter of
time before Walla Walla came over all français. Cool, minimalist Brasserie 4 is one of its
best manifestations, where the wait staff knows its wines and the Gallic-inspired food is
more than just a few pretentious names on the menu. Try the moules frites (mussels and
fries), cheese plate or excellent steaks.
T-Maccarones MEDITERRANEAN$$$
$$$
( 509-522-4776; www.tmaccarones.com ; 4 N Colville St; dinner mains $23-37; dinner, break-
fast Sun) Another good reason to come to Walla Walla is T-Maccarones, a contemporary
restaurant with Italian inflections that's guaranteed to reignite your tired palate after a
tough day in the wine-tasting rooms. Big hitters include pear salad, beef tenderloin,
prawn polenta and a house fontina mac 'n' cheese. It's food as art, so book ahead.
