WORTH A TRIP
WAITSBURG
Isolated and bucolic Waitsburg (21 miles north of Walla Walla on US 12) has be-
come the unlikely location of a burgeoning restaurant and bar scene. If you want to
get way out into the sticks but still get a New York City-style cocktail and really
good coffee, this town is for you. Within the historic brick buildings of the few wide
streets you'll find a handful of worth-the-drive restaurants, bars and cafes; there's
Southern fare at Whoopemup Hollow Cafe (120 Main St; 5-10pm Wed-Thu, 11:30am-2pm
Sat & Sun) and superb tapas and cocktails at Jimgermanbar (119 Main St;
5pm-late Thu-
Mon) .
Activities
Halcyon bike rides between wineries are just the tip of the outdoor-activity iceberg in
Walla Walla.
Amavi Cellars WINE TASTING
(3796 Peppers Bridge Rd; 10am-4pm) South of Walla Walla, amid a scenic spread of
grape and apple orchards, you can sample some of the most talked about wines in the
valley (try the syrah and cabernet sauvignon). The classy yet comfortable outdoor patio
has views of the Blue Mountains.
Waterbrook Wine WINE TASTING
( www.waterbrook.com ; 10518 W US 12; 11am-6pm Mon-Thu, to 8pm Fri & Sat) About 10 miles
west of town, the pondside patio of this large winery is a great place to imbibe a long se-
lection of wines on a sunny day. Outrageously good tacos (two for $6) are served on Fri-
day and Saturday.
Dusted Valley Wines WINE TASTING
(1248 Old Milton Hwy; noon-5pm Thu-Mon Apr-Nov) At this great example of one of the
valley's better small wineries, the tasting room is attached to the owner's home. Imbibe
in the garden and grab lunch at one of the food trucks that often park nearby.
