Wenatchee
POP 32,373
In the age of video blogging and lightning-fast messaging, the definition of Wenatchee
can be condensed into six familiar letters: 'apples'. pink lady, gala, braeburn, golden de-
licious; the varieties are endless in a city that not inaccurately describes itself as the
'Apple Capital of the World' (the region produces more than half of the total US crop).
On the banks of the Columbia River, Wenatchee's position is eye-catching even if its
mall, fast food and cheap-motel-infested suburbs aren't. The town itself isn't exactly
teeming with pulsating distractions, but there are plenty of outdoor adventures nearby
and, with its handy transport connections, Wenatchee is an OK place to crack open your
suitcase for the night and sample a slice of apple pie.
WORTH A TRIP
CASHMERE
Stopping in this cute, midcentury-meets-Wild West brick town between Leaven-
worth and Wenatchee is a must if your family traditions involved Aplets & Cotlets
(an American take on Turkish delight: a jellied fruit candy with nuts and dusted with
powdered sugar). Liberty Orchards (117 Mission Ave; 8:30am-5:30pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm
Sat & Sun) which have been producing these addictive sweets since the 1930s
are based here and offer free tastings and tours through summer.
To work off your sugar high, visit Apple Annie's Antique Gallery (100 Apple Annie Ave;
9am-6pm) and Antique Mall at Cashmere (603 Cotlets Way;
9am-6pm) , two of the
largest antique shopping venues in the Pacific Northwest.
