CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Leavenworth's alpine houses look like a Christmas card at the best of times, and no
more so than in the first three weeks of December, when the locals relight the town
three times on the first three Saturdays of the month. There's live music, carol
singing and, of course, an appearance by Father Christmas.

on Icicle Rd on the way to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness; there are 45 campsites here and
access to the Enchantment Lakes area.

The most authentic Bavarian hotel in town is also spotless and incredibly
friendly. Each room is decorated in imported Austrian decor and the European-inspired
breakfasts may induce joyful yodels. Our favorite room is the double with handpainted
furniture, but the spacious suite in the adjacent St Joseph's chapel (that the owners res-
cued and moved here in 1992) is perfect for families.

A Leaven-
worth classic, with long-term owner Bob Johnson starting the day with a blast on his
famous alpenhorn before breakfast. If this doesn't send you running for your lederhosen,
cast an eye over the free putting green (with resident grass-trimming goats), the indoor
and outdoor swimming pools, the panoramic upstairs restaurant, or the nightly pianist
pounding out requests in the Bavarian lobby.

This lodge takes the Bavarian theme to luxury levels in a plush, clutter-free establish-
ment with modern - but definably German - rooms complete with gas fires, king-size
