16 Spotting a pod of majestic killer whales, also known as orcas, can make
your day! And there's hardly a better place to do it than around Washing-
ton's Puget Sound. Take a boat tour from Friday Harbor ( Click here ), on San
Juan Island, where resident pods (totaling about 90 whales) frolic and hunt for
salmon. Here, sightings are nearly guaranteed in summer. Or plant yourself at
Lime Kiln Point State Park ( Click here ) and get lucky from the shoreline. On Van-
couver Island, Telegraph Cove ( Click here ) is another exceptional jumping-off
point from which to spot these great beasts.
