style hotel with a wraparound verandah, the Packwood ain't fancy, but it's authentic -
and at this price, who can argue? There are nine varied rooms in the renovated 1912 es-
tablishment, two of which can accommodate four people. Chuck in free wi-fi, free coffee
and the odd elk roaming the grounds and you're laughing.

ier and Mt St Helens, the Cowlitz is the sister motel to Ashford's Nisqually Lodge and
offers 32 above-average motel rooms along with the obligatory outdoor Jacuzzi.
Butter Butte CAFE, BAKERY$
(105 E Main St, Packwood; 7am-5pm) While cops eat doughnuts, park rangers seem to
prefer muffins. Stop in at this cozy morning spot for the best coffee in town (staff roast
their own beans), baked goods and perhaps an informative chat with a friendly, khaki-
clad officer.
