Colonial Creek Campground CAMPGROUND$
( 206-386-4495; Hwy 20, mile 130; campsites $12) These 142 campsites skirt the Thunder
Arm of Diablo Lake on either side of the highway. On the southern side, several walk-in
campsites among dense woods offer a chance to get away from the cars. There are toilets
and water but no showers or hookups. In summer naturalist programs are given nightly in
the amphitheater. Open year-round.
Ross Lake Resort HISTORIC HOTEL$$$
( 206-386-4437; www.rosslakeresort.com ; cabins $155-315; mid-Jun-Oct) The floating
cabins at this secluded resort, on the lake's west side, were built in the 1930s for loggers
working in the valley soon to be flooded by Ross Dam. There's no road in - either hike
the 2-mile trail from Hwy 20 or take the resort's supply boat from the parking area near
Diablo Dam. Cabins vary in size and facilities, but all feature electricity, plumbing and
kitchenettes.
Bedding and kitchen supplies are provided, but guests should bring food. The resort
rents canoes ($34 per day), kayaks ($44) and motorboats ($105), and operates a water-
taxi service for hikers destined for trailheads around the lake ($2). If you need to pick up
some food, stop by the Skagit General Store in Newhalem, which has sandwiches, fudge
and hot coffee. Note that there's no internet or phone reception out here, so this is a com-
plete getaway.
