Eating
Cottage Bakery & Deli BAKERY, CAFE$
(118 Pacific Way S, Long Beach; cakes from 85ยข) Worth-getting-up-for cakes and pastries, or
roll in for breakfasts of healthy porridge followed by a slightly less healthy old-fashioned
glazed doughnut. Old signs on the walls advertise war bonds, but the high quality of the
cakes never changes.
42nd Street Cafe AMERICAN, FUSION$$$
( 360-642-2323; 4201 Pacific Hwy, Seaview; mains $12-28; 8am-2pm & 4:30pm-close) The
menu is small, but there's something for everyone here, from great burgers to grilled sal-
mon and bouillabaisse. Classy country-style decor, an extensive wine and cocktail menu
and service that makes you feel like a local by meal's end make this one of this area's co-
ziest dining experiences. All ingredients are locally sourced.
Depot FUSION$$$
$$$
( 360-642-7880; 1208 38th Pl, Seaview; mains $22-30; dinner) Dine in Seaview's 1905
train station, where a Detroit-raised chef cooks up dishes inspired from his multi-ethnic
youth. Mains and 'small plates' are created from local seafood, meats and veggies - there
are dishes like Peruvian mango scallops, Moroccan osso buco and fig-glazed quail mars-
ala. It's consistently rated the top dining option in town, so reservations are recommen-
ded.
Restaurant at Shelburne Country Inn NORTHWESTERN$$$
$$$
( 360-642-4142; 4415 Pacific Way, Seaview; mains pub $20-26, restaurant $22-33; from
5:30pm) Many consider the restaurant at the Shelburne Country Inn one of the show-
places of Northwest cuisine. The dining room, dominated by stained-glass windows
salvaged from an English church, is certainly one of the most charming you'll find. Local
seafood, fish, poultry and lamb are served with a consistently inventive flair. An English-
style pub on the premises serves lighter fare.
