turn to uptown Westport and head west on Ocean Ave. You can also bike or hike there
along the Westport Maritime History Trail , a 6.5-mile pedestrian pathway that passes the
marina and treks along a dune trail into Westhaven State Park. Tours of the lighthouse
are available through the maritime museum. Just beyond the lighthouse, Westport Light
State Park has wind-screened picnic sites and access to a stretch of beach that's closed to
motor vehicles in summer.
Activities
Charter fishing is still a hot drawcard in Westport. The best fishing season runs from
April through October (depending on the fish). Regular trips target black rockfish, ling
cod, salmon, halibut and tuna, using live bait and conforming to set fishing limits. One-
day licenses can be purchased with the excursion. Deckhands can fillet your fish for an
extra fee and even arrange to have it vacuum-packed, smoked or stored. Prices start at
around $120 per person per day for salmon fishing and up to about $230 for halibut, but
shop around.
Most of these charter companies also run whale-watching excursions in the spring.
Stroll along the marina and check the offerings. An hour-long excursion will generally
cost around $38/28 per adult/child.
For more about charter fishing contact Deep Sea Charters ( www.deepseacharters.net ;
2319 Westhaven Dr, Westport) , or procure a full list of operators at the visitor center.

also a small cottage in the grounds for families or larger groups.
