Welcome to another rustic cabin-resort that feels like its own small village, with a shop,
cafe and marina on a shimmering waterfront facing crimson Canadian sunsets. Besides
the cabins there are deluxe fixed 'tent cabins' with wood floors but no electricity, and a
few campsites ($33) in a grassy clearing a few hundred feet from the shore.

This magnificent seafront mansion built by former shipbuilding magnate Robert Moran
in 1904 is now the centerpiece of an upscale resort, and the setting oozes F Scott Fitzger-
ald -style romance. The 180 modern rooms sprawl across the grounds surrounding the
old mansion, and the complex includes tennis courts, a swimming pool, a marina and a
spa.
THE SAN JUANS BY HUMAN-POWER
From 1-acre Posey Island to 57-sq-mile Orcas Island, the San Juans aren't large,
meaning you don't need a 210HP V6 engine to get around. Instead, a leg-powered
bicycle or an arm-powered kayak will easily do the job.
The biking is memorable on all three main islands (and Shaw if you're up for a
short circuit). Lopez Island is the most popular with cyclists thanks to its flattish
terrain and salutation-offering local motorists (there are bike racks outside almost
every shop and business). San Juan Island's roads are a little busier but no less al-
luring, while hilly Orcas offers the biggest challenge for aspiring cyclists, with the
5-mile-long drag to the top of 2409ft Mt Constitution worthy of a miniature 'King of
the Mountains' competition. All three islands have bike rentals that can deliver
cycles to the ferry terminal during peak months. Hire fees are approximately $35
per day. Contact the following:

between them. Kayaking away from the coast can be challenging, with strong
