( 360-317-8693; www.goldentreehostel.com ; 1159 North Beach Rd, Eastsound; dm/d with shared
bath $38/88; ) Take an 1890s-era heritage mansion, give it a hip remodel that retains
the building's old charm then add plenty of fireside, couch-filled communal areas and a
well-equipped kitchen. Oh and there's a hot tub and sauna out back. Whether you choose
to stay in the immaculate six-bed single-sex dorms or bright private rooms with shared
bath, you'll be in hostel heaven.
Bikes can be rented for a bargain $15 and shuttles from the ferry are $3.
Orcas Hotel HOTEL$
( 360-376-4300; www.orcashotel.com ; Orcas Landing; r with shared/private bath from $89/160;
) Built in 1904 and refurbished in the 1990s, the rather pokey interior and small rooms
of the Orcas Hotel are like something from the pages of a stiff Jane Austen novel, with
narrow corridors, patterned wallpaper and a manicured garden. Perched on a bluff above
the ferry terminal, it's not in the luxury bracket but has a certain old world vitality.
Moran State Park CAMPGROUND$
( 360-376-2326; campsites $23) The largest camping area in the San Juans has more than
150 campsites (no hookups) at four lakeside locations: one at Mountain Lake and three at
Cascade Lake. Reservations are a must in summer.
Outlook Inn HOTEL$$$
( 360-376-2200; www.outlookinn.com ; 171 Main St, Eastsound; r with shared/private bath from
$79/119; ) Eastsound's oldest and most eye-catching building, the Outlook Inn (1888)
is an island institution that has kept up with the times by expanding into a majestic, white
(but still quite small) bayside complex. All rooms are bright with a timeless style but the
cheapest have shared bathrooms, while rooms in the motel-style east building have en
suites.
The positively luxurious bay-view suites boast Jacuzzi tubs. Also on-site is the fancy
New Leaf Cafe.
Beach Haven CABIN$$$
MAP
( 360-376-2288; www.beach-haven.com ; West Beach; apt $125, cabins $150-300; ) Log
cabins in an assortment of sizes line a quiet and private gray-pebble beach. The tall trees
throughout the whole property give the resort a magical feel of being both in the forest
and on the seashore at the same time. Apartments are in a lodge that's also on the beach
and managment is exceptionally friendly.
