Vashon Island
More rural and countercultural than Bainbridge, Vashon Island has resisted suburbaniza-
tion - a rare accomplishment in the Puget Sound area. Much of Vashon is covered with
farms and gardens; the small community centers double as commercial hubs and artists'
enclaves. Cascade views are great, with unencumbered vistas of Mt Rainier and north to
Baker.
Vashon is a good island to explore by bicycle or car, lazily stopping to pick berries or
fruit at a 'U-pick' garden or orchard. There's also the option to plan a hike in one of the
county parks.
From Pier 50 in Seattle, a passenger-only ferry leaves six times each weekday for Vas-
hon Island ($5, 25 minutes). However, the ferry deposits you far from the centers of Vas-
hon commerce and culture, so you'll need to bring a bike ($1 extra charge) or have a lift
arranged. From Fauntleroy in West Seattle, a car ferry leaves over 30 times daily for Vas-
hon (passenger/car and driver $5.10/17.25, 15 minutes). Fares are collected only on the
journey to the island.

Bremerton
Seattle's other ferry destination is Bremerton, the largest town on the Kitsap Peninsula
and Puget Sound's principal naval base. The main attractions here are the Puget Sound
Navy Museum (
360-479-7447; www.pugetsoundnavymuseum.org ; 251 First St;
10am-4pm
Mon-Thu & Sat, 1-4pm Sun)
and the historic destroyer USS Turner Joy , right next to
the ferry terminal.
The car ferry to Bremerton makes frequent daily trips from the terminal at Pier 52
(passenger/car and driver $7.85/13.55, one hour). Passengers are charged only on the
westbound journey; those with vehicles pay both ways.
