Cycling & Mountain Biking
Car-crazy Texas is only friendly to road cyclists in some places. Cities such as Austin and
Fort Worth have developed good bike trails, but in many instances road riders will be shar-
ing space with street traffic and extreme caution is necessary.
For urban excursions, Austin has a number of good trails, including those in Zilker Park
( Click here ) and at Lady Bird Lake ( Click here ). In Fort Worth, Trinity Trails ( Click here )
run riverside for 35 miles. Katy Trail ( Click here ) is only 3.5 miles, but passes through
some nice neighborhoods in Dallas. McAllister Park ( Click here ) will give you a taste of
Hill Country cycling but is only 7 miles from downtown San Antonio.
In west Texas you'll find a good variety of road cycling under not-too-crowded condi-
tions, especially around Fort Davis. The Davis Mountains State Park ( Click here ) also has
mountain biking. Big Bend Ranch State Park ( Click here ) has the only 'Epic' ride, as cat-
egorized by the International Mountain Biking Association.
In the Panhandle Plains, the 64-mile Caprock Canyons Trailways ( Click here ) is an ex-
cellent multiple-use trail with many bridges, fenced railroad trestles and a 1000ft tunnel.
