Land & Wildlife
Let the Texas landscape surprise you. No less than 35 ecoregions exist here, and not
one of them is called 'hot and flat as a pancake'. OK, maybe the northern Panhandle
Plains should be... In any case, contrary to stereotypes, white-sand beaches, soaring
pine forests and snow-capped mountains are all part of the picture. Indigenous birds,
mammals and alligators outnumber the head of cattle here. Which means the nature
of the state is a major reason to visit.
Texas Parks & Wildlife ( www.tpwd.state.tx.us ) is an incredible resource for information on land use and
wildlife in Texas. Their downloadable Young Naturalist series is recommended for kiddos.
