Texas Country Today
Meanwhile, back at the ranch... Texas continued producing singer-songwriters who didn't
quite fit the Nashville country mold. Following close behind Waylon and Willie were
artists like David Allen Coe, Lyle Lovett, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Robert Earl Keen,
Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell and Jerry Jeff Walker (admittedly a transplant).
And yet another sub-genre was created. When you hear someone talking about 'Texas
country,' they're talking about a sound as well as describing the fact that the musicians hail
from the state. Think of it as a progressive continuation of the outlaw phase. Radio stations
across the state host daily or weekly Texas-country hours; some have even changed their
format to be all Texas country, all the time. When tuning in, listen for Roger Creager, Pat
Green and Gary P Nunn, in addition to those we've listed above.
