In-Depth Information
In recent years Austin's film-making has blossomed into an industry spearheaded by
directors Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, and actor Sandra
Bullock, all of whom either live or own property in Austin. Of the state's many film fest-
ivals, the town boasts two of the heavy hitters: the Austin Film Festival ( Click here ) in
October and the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival ( Click here ) in March.
Any number of TV shows have included Texas in some capacity, including Reba, King
of the Hill, The Client List , even Storage Wars Texas , a reality show on A&E. But Dallas
(1978-1989) is undoubtedly the most recognized Texas TV show of all times. The soap
opera resumed as the new Dallas in 2012, continuing to follow the filthy-rich oil family,
the Ewings. Several original cast members returned; unfortunately Larry Hagman passed
away during the filming of the second season.
Coming in a close second for illustrating iconic Texas stereotypes is Friday Night
Lights (2006-2011), based on the film and the book of the same name. It was originally
based on life and football in the small west Texas town of Odessa. Though garnering crit-
ical acclaim and cult-like status in-state, it was never universally popular and was can-
celled. You can still catch it on iTunes and Netflix.
