CUSTOM BOOTS
It's the ultimate west-Texas souvenir: a gorgeous pair of cowboy boots made just for you. As boot maker to the
stars, Rocketbuster Boots MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 915-541-1300; www.rocketbuster.com ; 115 S Anthony St;
showroom 8am-4pm Mon-Fri, personalized service by appointment) has shod such celebrities as Julia
Roberts, Dwight Yoakum, Emmylou Harris and Oprah Winfrey. Its over-the-top designs include everything from
wild floral prints to 1950s-era pin-up cowgirls to Day of the Dead skeletons.
Sure, you could just pick up a pair of mass-produced boots like most people do - after all, these beauties start
at $850 and go up to $3500 or more for a one-of-a-kind design - but it's not the same as having something cre-
ated just for you. Your feet will know the difference, and besides, you'll be much less likely to get stopped on the
street by awestruck admirers.
One visit to the showroom and you might be a little awestruck yourself. It's not a shop, per se, but there are lots
of samples so you can get some inspiration. Call first if you'd like some personalized attention from owner-de-
signer Nevena Christi. Otherwise, poke your head in for a visual treat, both from the boots and from the whimsic-
al shop that's decorated with both space-age gadgets and cowboy memorabilia.

DANGERS & ANNOYANCES
El Paso is among the safest cities of its size in the US. This is due in part to Operation
Hold the Line, an effort to crack down on illegal immigration into El Paso. Green-and-
white Border Patrol vehicles are highly visible all along the El Paso side of the Rio
Grande, and the police presence has had the side effect of quelling crime.
Crossing over into Juárez is a different story. While El Paso is one of the safest cities,
Juárez has become one of the most dangerous, due to gruesome violence - some of it ran-
dom - resulting from drug wars. For now, just say no.
