History
Native Americans had already settled the El Paso area for thousands of years when Span-
ish explorers first arrived in the 1530s. What is now the Mexican city of Juárez was foun-
ded in 1659 as 'El Paso del Norte,' but it wasn't until 1827 that the first permanent settle-
ments were established on the northern banks of the Rio Grande on the site of what we
now know as El Paso.
By 1873, El Paso had been incorporated as a Texas city, and the Southern Pacific Rail-
road came to town in 1881, bringing with it gunfighters like John Wesley Hardin and
kicking off El Paso's Wild West era.
In 1911, the Mexican Revolution, led by Pancho Villa, sent many Mexicans fleeing
from Juárez to safety in El Paso, but it also stirred up controversy over the precise location
