FIRST THANKSGIVING
We all know that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 at Plymouth, right? Not so fast, says El Paso. In
1598, while traveling from Mexico to Santa Fe with an eye toward settling the Southwest, Don Juan de OƱate led
500 followers to the banks of the Rio Grande at what is now San Elizario, Texas. There, the Spanish colonists met
with Native Americans for what many El Pasoans say was the real first Thanksgiving, 23 years before the Pil-
grims feasted at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Anyone who loves their traditional Thanksgiving feast should
give thanks that we celebrate the 1621 version, since the 1598 event occurred on April 30. (Just try finding fresh
pumpkin in April.)
