GODDESS OF JUSTICE
High atop the Presidio County Courthouse dome is the Goddess of Justice, one hand holding a sword and the
other holding - hey, wait, where are her scales? Her empty left hand, which lingers in the air almost like she's
checking her watch, probably did once hold a set of scales, as Goddesses of Justice so often do. But legend has it
that a gun-slinging cowboy back in the late 1800s shot them out of her hand with a rifle, saying, 'There is no
justice in Presidio County.' One way or the other, it makes a good story, and when the courthouse was restored in
2001 no attempt was made to restore the scales.
Festivals & Events
Every May or June, Marfa puts on the Marfa Film Festival ( www.marfafilmfestival.org ) , screening
features and shorts - including some of the Texas-centric films that have used Marfa as a
location. And September brings the Marfa Lights Festival - which has little to do with the
lights and is really just a good excuse to throw a town-wide street party.

the grounds are dry and dusty, you might have to shower outdoors, and there's no AC

cool and colorful community lounge and the hammock grove make particularly pleasant
common areas.
