Information
Study Butte refers to a cluster of buildings on Hwy 118 immediately outside the west gate
of Big Bend. One mile up the road, at the junction of Hwy 118 and FM 170, things pick
up a bit; that's where you'll find the Terlingua post office ( 432-371-2269) and a 24-hour
ATM at West Texas National Bank ( 432-371-2211) . Head west on FM 170 for more of the
town's business district. And keep going 5 miles to reach the historic area called the Ter-
lingua ghost town , where you'll find old ruins and new businesses built on top of old ru-
ins.
To get more information on the area, visit the Big Bend Chamber of Commerce (

Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa
About half an hour west from the junction in Terlingua, you can trade funky and dusty for
trendy and upscale (but still dusty) at Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa ( 432-424-5000;
www.lajitasgolfresort.com ; d from $169; ) . What used to be small-town Texas got
bought up and revamped into a swanky destination. The old trading post is gone and in its
place is a new general store. (The former trading post was the stuff of folk legend, as it
was the home of a beer-drinking goat who got elected mayor of the town. Alas, no more.)
The resort has a pool, lighted tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course called Black Jack's
Crossing . There are also some well-run stables that are open to local visitors whether
they're staying at the resort or not. The Lajitas Equestrian Center offers horseback trail rides
by the hour ($50), sunset rides ($115), and overnight rides to the Buena Suerte Mine and
Ghost Town ($400).
