Rio Grande Village Campground
( 877-444-6777; www.recreation.gov ; campsites $14) On the southeastern edge of the park, this
campground offers 100 sites with water and flush toilets. Generators may only be used
from 8am to 8pm; mercifully, there is also a no-generator zone available.
Rio Grande Village RV Campground
( 432-477-2293; per 2 people $33, per extra person $3) If you have a larger RV, Rio Grande Village
is the only facility with hookups within the park. (Trailers over 25ft have trouble navigat-
ing the winding roads down into the Chisos Basin.) Since there aren't any restrooms, your
rig will need water and electrical hookups, as well as a 3in sewer connection.

MOTEL $$
Chisos Mountains Lodge
( 877-386-4383, 432-477-2291; www.chisosmountainslodge.com ; lodge & motel r $123-127, cottages $150) This
concessionaire-operated complex in the basin gets good, if not great, marks for accom-
modations and food service. You can do better on both counts if you stay outside the park,
but the scenery here is a lot better, and it's nice not to have to drive 45 minutes to rest up
after your hike.
The lodge offers three overnight options. Roosevelt Stone Cottages are the choice accom-
modations in the park. Each has three double beds, so you could sleep six people semi-
comfortably. There are only four of these cottages, though, so they're hard to come by.
Casa Grande Lodge and Rio Grande Motel both have modest, motel-style rooms with private
balconies and good views of the basin and surrounding mountains. Most rooms have two
double beds; a few have one double and one single. The guest rooms here don't have TVs
or telephones. Reservations are a must, but management says there are often cancellations.
Chisos Basin Store
( 432-477-2291; 8am-9pm) Snacks, camping supplies, cold beer, suntan lotion, sun hats
and even some souvenirs can all be found at the convenience store in the Chisos Basin
right next to the visitor center. You can find a similar selection at the Rio Grande Village Store (
432-477-2293;
MARKET $
8am-7pm, to 5pm summer) and in the La Harmonia (
10am-6pm, to 4pm summer)
store at Castolon.
