Eating & Drinking
As elsewhere throughout the borderlands, Mexican food is the most common cuisine here,
but there are good alternatives. North 10th St is lined with eateries.
Ms G's Tacos n' More
( 956-668-8226; 2263 Pecan Blvd; mains from $3; 6:30am-8pm Mon-Fri, 7am-3pm Sat) Ms G herself ar-
rives every morning at 4:30am to make the region's best flour tortillas for her deceptively
simple tacos. Options are many, but you'll never go wrong with carne guisada (spicy
beef), beans and avocado. There's no place to sit, so either picnic or enjoy this fine fare in
your car.
MEXICAN $
Costa Messa
( 956-618-5449; 1621 N 11th St; mains from $8; 11am-10pm) With a menu that crosses the border
and gets away from Tex-Mex standards, this casual sit-down place is a great place to ex-
plore dishes you might not have had, such as various hearty soups and a bevy of shrimp
creations. The fiery guacamole is not to be missed.
MEXICAN $
Roosevelt's at 7
( 956-928-1994; 821 N Main St; mains from $8; 11am-2am; ) In a land where miserable watery
domestic beers rule, the over 40 taps here are like a vision, a glorious vision. In the midst
of a modest arts district, Roo's has a large patio with a pool table and lots of casual food
like excellent pizza, sandwiches and salads.
CAFE $
Patio on Guerra
( 956-661-9100; www.patioonguerra.com ; 116 S 17th St; mains $18-42; 5pm-late Mon-Sat) In the midst
of a small nightlife district in the old downtown, the Patio is popular for after-work drinks
on its namesake architectural feature. The wine list is superb and diners feast on some of
the finest steaks in the valley. There's regular live entertainment.
