historic self-walking tour maps both for the old town center and of the Oak Grove
cemetery. Interesting antiques shops occupy many of the old storefronts on Main St.

Sterne-Hoya House, built in 1828, is a good example of a refined town house of the era,
and was the site of Sam Houston's baptism (sites visited by Sam Houston are the Texas
equivalent of 'George Washington slept here').
Durst-Taylor House & Gardens

Get a
sense of the simple life led by less-affluent farmers at the circa 1830 Durst-Taylor house.
Docents grow gardens appropriate to the period here.

Don Antonio Gil Y'Barbo's 1789 stone house subse-
quently served as a grocery store, a saloon and a fortification. Exhibits in the reconstruc-
ted 'fort' serve as an overview of east Texas history.

Tour a slightly ragtag collection of 12 old buildings dating from 1820 to 1905, in-
cluding a schoolhouse and a log cabin. Weekends, hands-on activities include plowing and
writing with a quill pen.

The month of March is an azalea extravaganza, with three differ-
ent mapped routes to follow and events like home tours, plant sales and downtown shop-
ping strolls. Check with the visitor center to estimate when blooms will peak.
