Information
Galveston Island Visitors Center ( 409-797-5145; www.galveston.com ; Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway;
10am-5pm Mon-Sat, 9am-4pm Sun) After Hurricane Ike, Ashton Villa (1851) did not reopen to the
public, but the visitor center took up residence on a lower level. Pick up a map and the is-
land's 'official guide,' which has coupons, or buy a Galveston Island Pass
( www.galvestonislandpass.com ) here. The latter gets you 40% off big-name attractions
like Moody Gardens.
Getting There & Around
From Houston, follow I-45 southeast for 51 miles. On the island, the highway morphs into
Broadway Ave and travels toward the historic districts. Turn off onto 61st St to reach
Seawall Blvd.
Hurricane Ike knocked the Galveston Island Trolley, run by Island Transit ( 409-797-3900;
www.islandtransit.net ; adult/child $1/0.50) , off the rails. Until it's restored - at some far distant, un-
determined date - you really need a car to get around. The island's bus service caters to
local commuters, not tourists.
Galveston Limousine Service ( 409-744-5466; www.galvestonlimousineservice.com ) Three buses a day
travel both to and from Houston Hobby Airport (adult/child $45/20, one hour) and Hous-
ton Intercontinental Airport (adult/child $55/25, two hours). Advance reservations re-
quired.
