Bishop's Palace

between 1886 and 1893, this ornate stone mansion has hidden back stairs and other fun
features. Self-guided audio tours explain the home's history. Docent-led tours depart daily
at 12:30pm and 3:30pm. Discount coupons and tickets are widely available.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum

to 1984, this offshore rig drilled for oil in up to 173ft of water out in the gulf. Now
moored off the end of 19th St, it has been converted into a three-level museum that ex-
plains offshore oil exploration for people who want to know more about both benefits and
dangers.

Railroad Station, this little museum has exhibits on train history as well as model rail-
roads. Saturday you can all-aboard for a 15 minute train ride on the tracks out back.
East Beach
(1923 Boddecker Dr, off Seawall Blvd; per vehicle $16; dawn-dusk Mar-Oct) Also called Apffel Park,
this vast expanse of hard-packed sand is at the very far northeastern end of the island. On
summer weekends, it hosts live concerts and becomes one vast outdoor party (large signs
proclaim 'drinking permitted').
There is beach parking for a mere 7000 cars here. Per-vehicle admission is discounted
weekdays; you can also park before the entrance and walk the roughly 500ft in for free.
