10am-4pm) was originally the home of the last president of the Republic of Texas. Today
costumed docents, and real sheep and cows, recreate farm life in the 1850s.
Weekends-only, R Place ( 936-878-1925; www.rplacetexas.com ; 23254 FM 1155 E; dishes $5-9, dinner
$18; 11am-6pm Fri, 11am-9pm Sat, 11am-6pm Sun) serves sandwiches and barbecue and Saturday
night cooks up one main dish at dinner for patrons to enjoy family style.
Head across the Brazos River from here and the topography changes to endlessly flat
floodplains and agricultural fields, with Bryan-College Station 30 miles to the north.
Brenham is 20 miles south; Houston, 80 miles southeast.
