5-10:30pm Mon-Fri, noon-10pm Sat & Sun) Foodies' local fave for Houston's freshest sushi. Spe-
cialty rolls and super toro tuna aren't the only options that shine on this eclectic menu,
which includes fusion noodle and grill dishes. We dare anyone to dislike the miso mac-
and-cheese.
Tiny Boxwoods
( 713-622-4224; http://tinyboxwoods.com ; 3614 W Alabama; breakfast, brunch & lunch $10-20, dinner mains
$22-45; 7am-10pm Tue-Sat, brunch 9am-2pm Sun) Set among blooming flowers in a River Oaks
garden shop, this lovely cafe is a natural respite for ladies who lunch. With food this good
(aged Gouda grilled cheese and pesto sandwiches at noon, buffalo tenderloin with mush-
room risotto at night), guys secretly love it too.

Philippe Restaurant & Lounge
( 713-439-1000; www.philippehouston.com ; 1800 Post Oak Blvd; lunch mains $16-28, dinner mains $19-45;
11am-3pm & 5:30-10:30pm Mon-Thu, 11am-3pm & 5-11:30pm Fri, 5-11:30pm Sat; ) French sophistication
meets Southern comfort. The buttermilk-fried calamari here are every bit as exquisite as
the gnocchi with chanterelles and truffle oil. A multicourse, master chef-set lunch is quite
the deal at $20. Unfortunately the lounge menu is nowhere near as inspired as the restaur-
ant's.

TOP OF CHAPTER
5 Houston Heights & Washington Avenue
Washington Ave is known for its nightlife, but you can find plenty to eat too. Several
Houston restaurant chains, such as Benjy's and Blue Fish, have outlets here.
Hubcap Grill & Beer Yard
( www.hubcapgrill.com ; 1133 W 19th St; burgers $5-10; 11am-9pm Mon-Thur, 11am-10pm Fri & Sat) Maybe
Hubcap is popular because everything's homemade, from the freshly formed beef patties
to the site-baked buns and hand-cut fries. Or maybe it's the crazy topping choices: Chee-
tos burger, anyone?
