everyone gets gussied up in their western best. The barbecue cook-off is a hot seller but so
are the nightly rodeos followed by big-name concerts - starring Bruno Mars to Blake
Shelton. Buy tickets way in advance. Fairgrounds-only admission gets you access to mid-
way rides, livestock shows, shopping and nightly dances.
Azalea Trail
( 713-523-2483; www.riveroaksgardenclub.org ) Named for the flowering shrubs in bloom at
this time of year in the six or more historic homes and gardens opened for tours on one
weekend in March.
GARDEN
Bayou City Art Festival festival
( 713-521-0133; www.bayoucityartfestival.com ) Hundreds of artists sell their wares, and
there's a festive array of musicians and food. This popular biannual festival takes places in
Memorial Park each March, and Downtown each October.
Houston International Festival
( 713-654-8808; www.ifest.org ) A multicultural celebration of food, art and music lights up the
city two weekends in April. Save money on concert tickets by purchasing ahead.

PARADE
Art Car Parade & Festival
( www.orangeshow.org ) Wacky, arted-out vehicles (think Mad Max or giant rabbits) hit
the streets en masse the second Sunday in May. The parade itself is complemented by
weekend-long festivities, including concerts.
Juneteenth
( 832-429-4432; www.houstonculture.org/juneteenth ) This celebration of African American culture,
with plenty of gospel, jazz and blues, takes place at Miller Outdoor Theater around June
19 - the day in 1865 when word reached Texas that slaves had been emancipated.
CULTURE
Pride Houston
( www.pridehouston.org ) One of the largest GLBT parades in the southwest. A Saturday
in late June, 1000-plus participants entertain with colorful floats, costumes and music.
Events spill over into an entire Pride week.
