Amarillo, this recreation area is a result of the Sanford Dam water project on the Canadian
River. It's a popular spot for boating and fishing.
Boat rentals are available at marinas in Meredith. Shep Brown's Boat Basin (

boats for rent.
For fishing, Lake Meredith is home to large-mouth, small-mouth and white bass, cat-
fish, white crappie, sunfish, carp and walleye.
Camping at Lake Meredith is free, mainly because amenities are limited: it offers no re-
servations, hookups or showers, but it does have picnic tables, grills and pit toilets. Sites
include spots overlooking the reservoir and more remote locations back in the canyons.
Alibates Flint Quarries
( 806-857-3151, 806-857-6680; www.nps.gov/alfl ; Cas Johnson Rd, off TX 136; Contact Station 8am-4.30pm)
It's not every day you can pick up a hammer stone used to make tools 10,000 years
ago or hold discarded shards of beautifully colored flint left behind by ancient peoples.
But at Alibates Flint Quarries visitors can touch the past and learn what it was like to live
off the land when mammoths roamed the plains.
Tours, which are the main way to visit, involve 1.5 miles of walking. You must call to
reserve these trips in advance. Otherwise there is a short self-guided walk you can do.

Canadian
POP 2800
Named for the local river, Canadian has few links with the cheery country far to the north
(although with locally popular Coors being owned by Molsen, you could say the conveni-
ence stores are filled with Canadian beer). Rather, it is a once-dying Texas plains town
(one of dozens) that, thanks to the leadership of the local Abraham family, has uniquely
saved itself by embracing tourism.
Main St - often a place to watch out for falling bricks in other small Texas towns - has
been much-restored; stores, cafes and a beautifully renovated movie theater are among the
highlights.
