Tue-Sun early Jun-mid-Aug) Hokey, jingoistic, over-the-top, effervescent and loud are just some
of the adjectives for this open-air musical show in the natural beauty of the park's Pioneer
Amphitheatre. From 6pm on show nights, it offers an extra-cost dinner catered by
Amarillo's Big Texan Steak Ranch.

Information
A small but pretty 1934 Visitors Center overlooks the canyon, has interpretive exhibits on
the area's geology and history, the region's best bookstore and good tourist info.
The best time to visit is in the fall or winter because it gets dang hot here in the sum-
mertime (carry lots of water!).
Getting There & Away
The park is at the end of TX 217, 12 miles east of Canyon and 24 miles southeast of
Amarillo.
SCENIC DRIVE: TEXAS 207 HIGHWAY
Many Panhandle locals say the best views of Palo Duro Canyon aren't in the park but along TX 207 between
Claude and Silverton in the south. This quiet 48-mile stretch enters the canyon lands about 13 miles south of
Claude (where the 1963 Paul Newman classic Hud was filmed). Some of the most dramatic scenery is at the
crossings of the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River and Tule Creek. From Silverton both Turkey and
Caprock Canyons are short drives.

Amarillo
POP 193,700
Long an unavoidable stop, roughly halfway between Chicago and LA on old Route 66,
Amarillo continues to figure in travel plans, simply by being the brightest light on the
543-mile stretch of I-40 between Oklahoma City, OK, and Albuquerque, NM.
