TOP OF CHAPTER
Around Lubbock
Down in the Texas Hill Country, wine seems to make sense. Up here on the boot-scootin,'
teetotalin' High Plains, it sounds like a joke. But hold those 'yucks,' as the Lubbock re-
gion has near-ideal wine-grape-growing conditions: sandy soil, hot days and cool nights.
Cabernets are the local specialty and more than 20 vineyards are now producing bold
reds. You can try many of these while in Lubbock at La Diosa Cellars, a welcoming wine
bar run by its namesake winery. Several others are good for a visit, and tours are generally
free.
Sights & Activities
Llano Estacado Winery
( 806-863-2704; www.llanowine.com ; 3426 E FM 1585 east of US 87; 10am-5pm Mon-Sat, noon- 5pm Sun)
This winery was founded in 1976, making it not only the largest but also the oldest of the
modern Texas wineries. Among the two dozen wines produced, the Chardonnays have
won plaudits.
Llano's (yah-no's) shop features its wines (most $10 to $20, although a gulpable blush
is $8) and myriad gourmet items, such as jalapeño mustard, that find their way to the back
of the fridge.
